Tony Monk is an ARCHITECT, AUTHOR, EDUCATIONALIST and EXPERT WITNESS
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE He qualified in Architecture at University College London and then obtained a Masters Degree at Yale University. He was a Founder Partner of Hutchison Locke and Monk (now HLM Architects) for some 30 years and was then Professor and Head of Architecture at the University of Luton (now Bedfordshire University).
He was an Architectural Advisor to the Sports Council Lottery Awards Panel, a non-executive Director of the Building Centre and a Founder Director of the Acton Housing Association (now A2 Dominion). He is a committee member of the Expert Witness Institute.
ARCHITECT Professor Tony Monk was a Founder and joint Senior Partner of Hutchison Locke and Monk (now HLM Architects Ltd). This national architectural Practice, with still six offices around the United Kingdom specializes in Healthcare, Civic and major developments. It was established as a result of winning a major architectural Competition, Paisley Civic Centre.
In that Practice Tony Monk personally directed the design and implementation of over 30 major architectural projects, including hospitals, civic centres, residential, commercial and sports developments. He is now a consultant with Edgington Spink and Hyne, Windsor.
AUTHOR Professor Tony Monk has produced two architectural books and numerous publications featuring architectural projects. John Wiley and Son published Tony Monk’s latest book in 2004. It is entitled “HOSPITAL BUILDERS”. It contains valuable information for the design, construction procurement and management of Britain’s huge hospital rebuilding programme and covers PFI, private funding initiatives and competitive healthcare partnerships. Sir Philip Powell wrote the poignant Foreword emphasizing the therapeutic benefits of architecture.
"ARCHITECTURE OF PAUL RUDOLPH”, is a biography of America’s most talented Late Modernist. Paul Rudolph was the Professor and Dean of Architecture at Yale University. He taught Tony Monk and other distinguished graduates including Lord Richard Rogers, Robert Stern and Lord Norman Foster, who wrote the book’s Foreword.
EDUCATIONALIST Professor Tony Monk was Head of Architecture at the University of Luton (now Bedfordshire University) from 1994 to 1997 and Professor of Architecture there from 1995 to 2001. In 1993 Tony Monk was primarily responsible for writing and validating the new architectural degree programme B Sc (Hons) Architecture and then for securing RIBA Part 1 Recognition in principle for the Course. The philosophy for the degree was; “The pursuit of architectural excellence, through quality design, modern technology and efficient management.” Professor
Tony Monk’s Inaugural Address given to the Faculty of Design and Technology at the University of Luton on 9 March 1995 was titled, “Architectural Education in the 21st Century.”
EXPERT WITNESS Professor Tony Monk is an eminent Architectural Expert Witness and is accredited to act in legal disputes covering design, technical and professional defects in the architectural and building industry. He specializes in Dispute Resolution for Architectural Professional Negligence, Design Problems, Contract Procedures and Technical Building Defects. He is a Court Appointed Expert, Single Joint Expert and undertakes legal Report writing.
He has substantial experience in Sports, Leisure, Commercial, Healthcare, Civic and Residential developments, constructional problems, Architectural Design and Building Defects. His Clients are typically Solicitors and Barristers, Building Contractors, Local Authorities and Companies who have experienced losses and have legitimate Claims for Building Defects or Design Expert Witness Institute where he is committee member .
